fuel additive options

prevention and treatments

Because of the biological make-up of petroleum products, they can be susceptible to a variety of problems if exposed to extreme temperatures, moisture, bacteria, or other contaminants.  Fuels that are affected by these issues can change in consistency and efficiency, causing potentially severe damage to boilers, furnaces, and engines of all sizes.  Listed below are some descriptions of some of the issues that we can prevent and treat, simply by adding a product at the time of your fuel delivery:

the science of fuels and chemical additives

ethanol-free gasoline vs. gas treatment

As temperatures begin to rise in the coming weeks, lots of customers will begin using mowers and other small engine equipment once again.  While Weaver Energy is able to deliver ethanol-free gasoline within Lancaster County in quantities of 150 gallons or more, it may not always be the best option for all customers.  Gasoline with ethanol is more readily available in smaller quantities, produces a cleaner burn and less expensive, but the ethanol content has been proven to damage small engines if it absorbs water from the atmosphere and separates from the gasoline over time.  This issue can be prevented with the simple use of a gasoline treatment additive.  This additive works to stabilize the fuel and combat deposits formed by ethanol.

microbial contaminants

Both diesel fuels and home heating oil can be susceptible to microbes if exposed to water or contaminants.  This includes the growth of bacteria and fungi over time, which then creates organic acids that cause corrosion to fuel tanks and damage to diesel engines.  If this is an issue that you may have experienced, we would be happy to speak to you about an additive that we offer that effectively kills these microbes and reduces engine maintenance costs, while improving fuel performance.  This biocide is effective in biodiesel as well all other diesel fuels.

winter treatment

Certain petroleum products, such as heating oil and diesel fuel begin to “gel” and even form ice crystals when exposed to freezing temperatures.  When this occurs, the lubricity of the fuel suffers, it is difficult to pour, and the thicker consistency of the fuel can actually severely damage engines and heating units.  Put simply, the low cost of a fuel additive can potentially save you thousands of dollars in damage to your heating system, equipment, or vehicles.  Usually, if your heating oil or diesel fuel tanks are located in a heated location, such as underground, in a basement, or in a heated garage or barn, the fuel remains warm enough to prevent this problem from occurring.  However, if you have outdoor, above ground tanks, or fuel sitting in vehicles or equipment in an unheated environment, it is best to treat the fuel with an additive during the colder months (we recommend November through March).  If you think that this treatment would be beneficial to you, please let us know when placing your next order.  We can discuss your options with you, give you the current pricing on treatments, and adjust your account to include seasonal additives during the colder months if you choose.

sludge and water contaminants

Sometimes oil tanks or heating units prove to be susceptible to rust or sludge – whether they are aging components that are part of an older home, neglected for long periods of time, or even exposed to the elements or contaminated heating oil.  To fight further corrosion, improve oil flow, and dissolve or dissipate water, sludge and rust, customers can simply request and purchase an additive along with their heating oil delivery.  This same additive is perfect for stabilizing your heating oil tank if it will go several months without any usage.  This is perfect for preventing accumulation of sludge and moisture all summer long.  An added benefit of using such an additive is a cleaner burn, which both reduces soot and increases burner efficiency.
