preparing for winter with home heating oil

home in winter

It may have been 90+ degrees just a week ago, but it won’t be long before it will be time to break out sweaters and jackets for some cooler weather.  For most folks there is no reason to think about home heating oil from April through September.  To help refresh your memory, here are some helpful tips to prepare for the upcoming heating season:

check the amount of fuel in your tank before the heating season starts

  • We receive plenty of out of oil calls during the first cold weekend of the year.  Check your tank level now so you have a general idea of when you might need to make your first order.  If you want to be completely removed from that responsibility, consider going on our reliable automatic delivery program, which is a free benefit offered to all our customers.

perform a quick safety check of your tank

  • While you’re checking your fuel level, do a brief walk around your oil tank.  Do you see any visible leaks or stains under the tank?  Are all four legs firmly on the ground?  Is the tank level?  Outside tanks are especially susceptible to movement during the freeze/thaw and wet weather that occurs between each winter season.

consider setting up a monthly payment plan

  • Since heating oil use is mainly consolidated to winter months the bills can add up quickly.  Consider taking advantage of our smart pay monthly payment program and break your heating oil usage into 12 equal monthly payments.  You can begin this program at any time but must have a full tank of oil prior to starting.

have your heating system professionally cleaned and inspected

  • A neglected heating system will use more heating oil to produce the same amount of heat as one in good repair.  Have one of our technicians check the combustion efficiency of your system and perform a thorough cleaning to make sure that you are getting the full value of every dollar you spend on heating oil.
